A DAY TRIP TO HENLEY-ON-THAMES

IMG_0952

Henley-On-Thames, a small town in Oxfordshire. A perfect place for a day trip and that is exactly what we did during the Easter weekend. A 45 minutes’ drive from London, it is an amazing little place. Henley is a world-renowned centre for rowing.

After getting there we just walked around the straight stretch of the river side. The weather was awesome which is a very rare thing in UK. Hehehe!!! We always have to plan according to the BBC weather report here. Children playing, birds chirping, fancy and luxurious yachts on the river, sunny weather and my husband by my side, what else you need for a perfect day out. 🙂

We had some nice coffee and Macaroons at a French patisserie called Maison Blanc. Thereafter we went for a short walk up Gravel Hill to the Gate House to Friar Park a 120 room mansion built in 1899 and was the home of former Beatle George Harrison. Of course we could not go inside as it is a private property.

Back down the hill we strolled around the high street browsing around shops. On Bell Street I managed to find a very interesting gift shop (don’t remember the name) next to the Old Bell Public House, the oldest surviving house in Henley dated 1325. Highly recommended.

I loved the high street. Unfortunately quite a few of the shops were closed as it was the Easter holiday. Good for my husband’s pocket, otherwise I would have ended up buying loads as I always do 🙂 . Confessions of a shopaholic!

All that walking had made us hungry and we went for a pub lunch at The Argyll on the market place. It was a hearty meal. I went for Scampi & Chips while he went for Banger & mash. Do you know why they are called bangers and not Sausages? During World War, quality of sausages were not very good and had a high water content. They used to explode as water burst out as steam during cooking and that’s how they got the name ‘Bangers’.

That was it for the day! With a content heart and belly, it was time to go back home.

Till then,
